DRIVING MISS DAISY
October 3, 4, 10, 11
at the Trust Student Building at the MET 12903 Jones Road, Houston, TX 77070
Winner of the 1988
Pulitzer Prize, Driving Miss Daisy is set in mid-century Atlanta and tells the story of an elderly Jewish matron, Daisy Werthan,
and her chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn. At first, Daisy is none too happy about being forced to rely on a black man.
But hoke gradually wins her over and, during the 25-year span of the play, the two develop a deep-rooted affection.
Alfred Uhry has created two characters of independence, strength and stubborn integrity and set them in a delilcate depiction
of racial tension. Audiences warm to the tender relationship that develops as Daisy and Hoke age together and develop
a mutual understanding that transcends the years and the prejudices that separate them. In a series of absorbing scenes
spanning twenty-five years, the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer to, and more dependent on, each other,
until, eventually, they both come to realize they have more in common than they ever believed possible—and that
times and circumstances would ever allow them to publicly admit. Performed by special arrangement with Dramatists Play
